How does Readiculous teach sound-letter correspondences?Updated 2 years ago
The primary goal of Readiculous is to teach children how to read. To do this, we introduce letter-sound correspondences one by one, following a pre-determined order that generally goes from easier/most common to harder/less common. For example, a,t,p,s are at the beginning of the sequence, whereas wr, kn, rh are at the very end. Each letter sound is encountered across different mini-games in a stable order. Each mini-game focuses on the same letter-sound correspondence but emphasises a different aspect.
- First, the Alphabet introduction game introduces a letter and the sound it makes with some example words.
- Then, the Bubble game gives more exposure to the sound each letter makes.
- Next, the phonics blending game shows new letter-sounds in the context of a word. The word is accompanied by an animation and a sentence which also build on the meaning of the word, mapping what children read onto meaning and contributing to vocabulary learning.
- Finally, ABC Bogart takes the same letter-sound and challenges children to find food items beginning with that sound, using their knowledge in practice.
This sequence of games is repeated twice for every new-sound letter in a stable order.
